The Tobago Cays Marine Park is the centrepiece of the Grenadines — five small uninhabited islands set inside the curve of Horseshoe Reef, three nautical miles offshore from Mayreau. The water is shallow and clear; the reef breaks the swell; sea turtles graze the seagrass meadows in the leeward shallows. There are no buildings, no roads, no permanent population. Just sand, reef, and a handful of yachts at anchor.
We sail in from Canouan in just under two hours, pick up a mooring in the lee of one of the cays — usually Petit Bateau or Petit Rameau — and stay for a full day. The morning is for snorkelling: the turtle sanctuary at the southern end of Baradal, the reef edge for stingrays and reef sharks, the wreck of the Antilles on the eastern shoals. Lunch is on deck. The afternoon is for paddleboards, beach time, and a swim across the gap between the cays.
Local boatmen come around the anchorage selling lobster — pulled from the reef that morning, grilled over a coal pot on the beach at sunset, served with rice and breadfruit. We arrange a beach grill if guests want to extend the day past sunset and sail back to Canouan in the evening light.

Protected seagrass meadow at the south end of Baradal — graceful greens grazing within 100 metres of the boat. A short swim from the mooring.
Horseshoe Reef snorkelling
The reef on the eastern edge of the park breaks the Atlantic swell — coral, parrotfish, the occasional reef shark. Best in the morning before the wind builds.
Beach lobster grill
Local boatmen radio the anchorage in the morning to take lobster orders for sunset — grilled on the beach over a coal pot, served on a banana leaf with rice and a beer.

Petit Bateau, Petit Rameau, Baradal, Jamesby, Petit Tabac — five sand-and-coral cays, no buildings, no roads. Walk between them in calf-deep water.

What's the route?
We leave Canouan around 9 AM, sail south past Mayreau, and arrive in the Cays by 11. Mooring up, snorkel break, lunch on deck, afternoon at the beach. Late afternoon return — back at Sandy Lane Marina by 6 PM. Sunset extension is available.
Can we swim with the turtles?
Yes — the turtle sanctuary at Baradal is a protected seagrass meadow with a near-resident population of green sea turtles. They're calm and used to swimmers. Marine-park guidelines: no touching, keep distance.
What if it rains or the weather changes?
We rebook to the next available day at no charge. The Cays anchorage is well-protected by the horseshoe reef; charters rarely cancel for weather.
Is there a marine-park fee?
Yes — small per-person daily fee paid to the local park rangers who patrol the moorings. Included in the charter rate; no separate cash payment required.
Can we extend into a sunset?
Yes. Sunset extensions are billed at $250 per additional hour. The light over the Cays is the best of the day, and the sail back to Canouan in the dusk is unforgettable.
