Skills and knowledge required for a Dinghy Level 1
- Can raise, lower and adjust sails safely in light winds
- Knows the Collision Regulations
- Wears appropriate clothing and buoyancy
- Can rig, reef, and launch a dinghy
- Can balance the boat, a) using body weight b) using the sheet
- Can identify reaching, run turn, and 'follow' back to departure point
- On a reach, can accelerate and decelerate with the sheet only
- Can accelerate and decelerate with the tiller, trimming sails appropriately
- Can set clear-headed and tack
- Can set by-the-lee, gybe from this position and can gybe
- Can stop the boat on a reach, close-hauled, and from a run
- Can prepare for towing
- Can recover a capsized dinghy
- Can tie a figure of eight knot, and a round turn & two half hitches
- Knows about weather forecasts, and sail aerodynamics
Skills and knowledge required for a Dinghy Level 2
- Can plane a dinghy, in moderate wind and wave conditions
- On a run, can maintain a constant angle of heel without body movement, spinnaker (optional) correctly trimmed
- Can reach with a constant angle of heel
- Can trapeze and has smoothly
- Can plane upwind and downwind, or re-start on a pre-determined tack
- Can tack and replicate trim and heel
- Can gybe reach to reach with spinnaker (optional)
- Can beat within a corridor
- Can do a bowline and hard rope ends
- Can recover an inverted dinghy
- Can release a trapeze harness
- Can reduce sail alone
- Knows interpret weather forecasts
- Can name all parts of sailing dinghy boat, buoyage, lee shores, tides, overhand power lines, anchors, boat maintenance

- Can plane a dinghy in strong wind conditions
- Can tune a dinghy, centreboard, mast rake, vang, Cunningham, outhaul, barber haulers
- Can roll tack and gybe
- Can sail backwards
- Can sail without a rudder
- Can detect wind shifts
- Can roll tack
- Able to start at correct end of line
- Can cover and lee bow another dinghy
- Can determine local weather patterns and wind strategy
- Knows Sailing Instructions, and the Racing Rules of Sailing
- Plus levels 1 & 2 criteria
