Skills and knowledge required for a Keelboat Level 1
- Can sail a keelboat under instruction, in light winds, respecting the collision regulations, and paying attention to balance and trim
- Wears appropriate clothing and buoyancy
- Can rig and reef a keelboat
- Can identify reaching, run turn and return back to departure point
- Can use a winch and trim sails on all points of sailing
- Can set clear headed and tack
- Can run, and gybe
- Can stop the boat on a reach, close-hauled, and from a run
- Can pick up a mooring
- Can sail alongside a jetty
- Can anchor
- Can prepare for towing
- Can tie a figure of eight knot and a bowline
- Knows, sources of weather forecasts, and sail aerodynamics
- Understands the importance of the crew working as a team
- Knows the procedure for man overboard
Skills and knowledge required for a Keelboat Level 2
- Can sail a keelboat in moderate winds
- Knows about keelboat rigs and equipment
- Can sail a compass course
- Knows the Collision Regulations
- Knows about sources of pilotage information, and how to use them
- Can gybe reach to reach with spinnaker (optional)
- Can beat within a corridor
- Can tie a bowline and heat seal rope ends
- Can anchor
- Can interpret weather forecasts
- Knows about, points of sailing, buoyage, lee shores, overheard power lines, anchors, boat maintenance
- Knows about tides, sources of information and how to calculate local tides
- Is aware of emergency procedures and First Aid afloat
- Plus level 1 criteria

- Can sail a keelboat in strong winds
- Completed all man overboard procedures
- Can interpret passage information, to perfect manoeuvres

- Can demonstrate an alternative means of propulsion
- Can moor more accurately
- Knows about weather forecasting and the tide
- Can cover and lee bow another keelboat
- Can determine local weather patterns and wind strategy
- Knows Sailing Instructions and the Racing Rules of Sailing
