Skills and knowledge required for a Yacht Crew

Yacht's construction

  • Knows the basic parts of yacht and what are they designed for:
  • a. Cockpit
  • b. Billings
  • c. Heads
  • d. Galley
  • e. Bow
  • f. Stern, aft etc.
  • g. Hull
  • h. Mast
  • i. Rigging
  • j. Sail
  • Can operate elementary yacht's systems:
  • a. Trekis
  • b. Toilet room
  • c. Galley
  • d. Plumcell
  • Can fill up the water and diesel tanks
  • Can operate the inboard engine
  • a. Ignition
  • b. Switch it off
  • c. Check whether cooling system works
  • d. Check fuel & steering

Line and spring handling

  • Can combine two lines of the same and different diameter
  • Can make:
  • a. Bowline
  • b. Hitch a line on a cleat
  • c. Hitch on a stand
  • d. Coil mooring lines
  • e. Care
  • f. Clove knot
  • g. Take
  • h. Needs tied on dock
  • i. Sheet cleaning lines

Handling sail sheets and halyards

  • Ease.
  • Set and bring down the sails
  • Reef down and shake off the reefs

Handling fenders

  • Can tie fenders on the yacht
  • Effectively operate the (dis)mounting fender

Operating the anchor

  • Gain:
  • Prepare anchor for weighing (swithces and controls)
  • Operate the windlass (letting out and raising the chain)

Operating the dinghy

  • Gain:
  • Inflate the dinghy or the deck and put it when in the deck
  • Secure the dinghy to the yacht
  • Use paddles effectively
  • Secure the dinghy to the stand

Safety

  • Gain:
  • Knows how's helped the deck
  • Use the safety equipment
  • Use the defense signaling equipment (pyrotechnics, mirror, flags etc.)
  • Can apply hand and torch signaling (flashlights – with consideration of natural (eyes) protection, fire hazard)
  • Apply various methods to make a distress signal (at least 4 methods)

Other skills

  • Gain:
  • Keep observation of the sailing crew and pass over information about the direction and distance to objects
  • Knows the lights of that own yacht in the night
  • Can swim the needed distance
  • Effectively hold the helm
