St. Martin
Our second home port — two countries, one island, French gastronomy in Marigot, Dutch energy in Philipsburg, and the best provisioning in the Caribbean.
From Antigua
80 nautical miles north-west · overnight passage
Best time to sail
December through May. April-May are particularly good — same trades, fewer cruise ships on the Dutch side.
St. Martin is one of our two home ports. The island is split between France (north, Saint-Martin) and the Netherlands (south, Sint Maarten) — two distinct cultures inside an 80-square-mile area, sharing one customs union and one of the largest charter-yacht harbours in the Caribbean. We base Flying Wing and Cap II here for the high season, with day and weekly charters operating directly out of Simpson Bay or Marigot.
Most guests join the yacht in St. Martin directly. From the base, the week loops through Anguilla, St. Barts, and back — three islands in seven days, all within 25 nm of each other. Guests who want a longer trip can start in Antigua, our other home port, and sail the 80-nautical-mile passage north together as part of a one-way charter.
St. Martin itself is the provisioning hub: French wine, charcuterie, fresh croissants from Marigot's Tuesday market, and ship's stores at every chandlery in Simpson Bay. The dining is a reason to stay: a French side that takes its food seriously, and a Dutch side that takes its evenings seriously.
Anchorages
Simpson Bay Lagoon
Largest enclosed lagoon in the Eastern Caribbean. Bridge access from both the French and Dutch sides; protected from any swell. The big charter yachts spend their off-weeks here.
Marigot Bay (French side)
Anchor off the capital of French Saint-Martin. Tender to the dock at the centre of town for the markets, restaurants, and Fort Louis above the bay.
Anse Marcel
Quiet northern bay, almost completely sheltered. Small marina ashore with a hotel and restaurant — popular for a quiet first night.
Tintamarre
Uninhabited island off the north-east coast. Anchor in 15 ft of clear water for a swim or lunch stop on a passage to Anguilla.
Ashore
Marigot Tuesday & Saturday market
The best provisioning stop in the Caribbean — fresh produce, cheese, fish, and the bakery on the corner. We send the chef ashore at 7am.
Grand Case
Mile-long stretch of restaurants on the French side. Lolos (street-side BBQ shacks) at one end, fine dining at the other. Reservations needed in season.
Pinel Island
Tiny island off the north-east coast, reachable by tender. Two beach restaurants, swim-up bar, sand bottom — favourite lunch stop.
