St. Vincent

The lush mainland — Wallilabou Bay, the Soufrière volcano, and the Caribbean as it was a generation ago.

35 nautical miles · 5-6 hour reach

Best time to sail

January through April for the volcano hike (clearest weather). Wallilabou is best in settled trades — the bay can roll in northerlies.

St. Vincent is the mainland of the country — eighteen miles long, dominated by the active La Soufrière volcano at the northern end, and the only Grenadine island with anything like a forest. It is the least-visited stop on a typical charter and the one that surprises guests the most: dramatic leeward bays cut into volcanic cliffs, a film-set fishing village at Wallilabou (where Pirates of the Caribbean was shot), and almost no other yachts.

Charters reach St. Vincent in a four-hour reach north from Bequia — usually as part of a longer northern-Grenadines week. Wallilabou Bay is the headline anchorage: a steep-sided fjord-like cove with the original Pirates of the Caribbean set partly intact and a small open-air restaurant at the head of the bay. The next bay south, Cumberland, is an even more dramatic anchorage — deep water right up to the cliff, lines tied ashore to local boatmen who hold the boat from drifting.

Inland, St. Vincent has the Caribbean's only working botanical garden (founded 1765) and the volcano hike to the Soufrière crater rim — a five-hour return walk for fit guests on a settled day. Most charters do not have time for the inland excursions; they're worth flagging if guests want a week with more shore time.

Anchorages

Wallilabou Bay

Famous for the Pirates of the Caribbean set — partly intact, partly weathered. Steep-sided cove on the leeward coast; mooring balls and stern lines to shore are the norm.

Cumberland Bay

The most dramatic anchorage in the Grenadines — vertical cliffs on three sides, deep water at the base. Local boatmen take stern lines for a small tip; absolutely no roll.

Petit Byahaut

Tiny private cove south of Wallilabou — accessible only by sea, no road, single eco-resort hidden in the trees. Lunch and a swim, then move on.

Ashore

Pirates of the Caribbean Set

The original Wallilabou village set built for the Disney film, partly maintained as a small visitor attraction. Walk through with the captain ashore.

Soufrière Volcano Hike

Five-hour return walk from the leeward base to the crater rim. Best on a clear day; we book a local guide and a vehicle from the anchorage.

Botanical Gardens

The oldest botanical garden in the Western Hemisphere (founded 1765) — short drive from Kingstown harbour. Worth half a day with a guide.
