Klein Curaçao is the signature day sail and, for most guests, the most beautiful place they see on the water. A small, flat, uninhabited island roughly 16 nautical miles off the south-east tip of Curaçao, it is ringed by some of the clearest water in the southern Caribbean — a long crescent of soft white sand on the leeward side, sea turtles grazing the shallows just off the beach, and an old coral-stone lighthouse standing alone above it all. There is nothing else there. That is the point.

We sail south-east from Spanish Water on the morning trades, an open reach of a couple of hours across to the island. The leeward west side is the anchorage — calm, sheltered water over white sand, where green and hawksbill turtles surface to breathe right beside the boat. The morning is for the water: snorkelling off the beach, a long swim, the paddleboards out. Ashore, the abandoned lighthouse and the bleached timbers of old shipwrecks on the wild windward shore make the short walk across the island worth it.

Lunch is on deck at anchor — grilled local fish, salads, fresh bread, fruit, cold drinks — eaten unhurried in turquoise water, with a swim again after. The windward (eastern) side of the island takes the full force of the trades and the surf; we keep the boat on the sheltered lee, and you cross on foot if you want to see the wrecks. We sail back to Spanish Water on the afternoon breeze, the island falling astern.

Highlights of this charter

Turtles in the shallows

The best turtle snorkelling on the charter — green and hawksbill turtles grazing the clear shallows just off the leeward beach, a short swim from the boat. Calmest and clearest in the morning.

The old lighthouse

The lone coral-stone lighthouse standing above the empty island — a short walk across the sand and scrub, and the landmark of Klein Curaçao, framed by nothing but sea and sky.

The white-sand beach

A long crescent of soft white sand on the leeward side — empty, uninhabited, ringed by some of the clearest water in the southern Caribbean. Lunch on deck just off it.

Shipwrecks on the windward shore

The bleached timbers and rusting hulls on the wild eastern shore, where the trades and the surf run unbroken — a short walk across the island for those who want to see them.

Before you enquire

What's the route?

We leave Spanish Water around 9 AM and sail south-east on the morning trades, an open reach of a couple of hours across to Klein Curaçao. We anchor on the sheltered leeward side for the turtle snorkel, lunch on deck, a walk ashore to the lighthouse and the wrecks, and an afternoon swim. Late-afternoon return — back at Spanish Water by 6 PM.

Can we swim with the turtles?

Yes — the clear shallows off the leeward beach hold green and hawksbill turtles grazing the seagrass, a short swim from the boat. They are calm and used to swimmers. Keep your distance and do not touch — they surface to breathe right beside you.

What if it rains or the weather changes?

Klein Curaçao is an open-water sail and depends on a settled trade-wind window. On the rare day the crossing isn't comfortable we rebook free of charge, or switch to a sheltered leeward-coast day. Curaçao sits below the hurricane belt, so settled days are the norm year-round.

Is there anything on the island?

Almost nothing — that is the appeal. An old lighthouse, the shipwrecks, a beach, and a few open shelters. There is no reliable food or water ashore, so everything for the day comes aboard with us: meals, drinks, shade, and snorkelling gear.

Can we extend into a sunset?

Yes. Sunset extensions are billed at $250 per additional hour. The light on the water on the afternoon sail back is the best of the day, and the reach into Spanish Water at dusk is unforgettable.
