The Los Haitises is one of Samaná's quiet wonders — a low sea cave near Playa Frontón, on the far north-west coast, where light entering from beneath the surface fills the chamber with an electric, luminous blue. You swim in under a low rock arch, so it is reached only from the water, by boat or with a guide; there is no road to it. The day sail is built around it, paired with the leeward coast's clearest beaches and the reef of the Los Haitises mangroves, named for the mushroom-shaped coral heads along the bottom.

We leave Marina Puerto Bahía and sail west along the leeward coast, the trades on the quarter and the dry, cactus-and-divi-divi landscape sliding past to starboard. The morning's first stop is one of the great west-coast beaches — Playa Playa Rincón, with its double reef, or Playa Rincón — for clear water and a snorkel before the day boats arrive. From there we work up toward Playa Frontón and the Los Haitises itself, timing the swim into the cave for the calmest light of the day.

The Los Haitises mangroves, off the coast near Playa Frontón, is the snorkel and dive site that pairs with the cave — shallow coral heads shaped like mushrooms, abundant fish, and the clearest visibility on the island. Lunch is on deck at anchor in a sheltered cove, with a swim again after. Divers can arrange to dive both the Los Haitises mangroves and the deeper sites here with a local operator. We sail back to Marina Puerto Bahía on the afternoon breeze, the long leeward coast unrolling astern.

Highlights of this charter

The Los Haitises National Park

A low sea cave near Playa Frontón where light from beneath the surface fills the chamber with electric blue. Reached only from the water — swim in under the rock arch, timed for the calmest light of the day.

The Los Haitises mangroves

The snorkel and dive site off Playa Frontón named for its mushroom-shaped coral heads — shallow, abundant with fish, and some of the clearest visibility on the island. Snorkel straight from the boat.

Swim at Playa Playa Rincón

One of the great west-coast beaches — clear water over a double reef, sheltered for a swim, and lunch on deck at anchor. Playa Rincón is the alternative when the day suits.

Optional diving

The Los Haitises mangroves and the deeper leeward-coast sites are among Samaná's signature dives — coral heads, walls, and clear water. Arranged in advance with a local dive operator from the boat.

Before you enquire

What's the route?

We leave Marina Puerto Bahía around 9 AM and sail west along the leeward coast, with a first swim at Playa Playa Rincón or Playa Rincón. We work up toward Playa Frontón for the Los Haitises and the Los Haitises mangroves, lunch on deck in a sheltered cove, and a final swim. Return sail to Marina Puerto Bahía in the late afternoon, back by 6 PM.

How do we get into the Los Haitises?

You swim in under a low rock arch from the water — the cave is reached only by boat or with a guide, never by road. We anchor or stand off nearby, the swim is short, and we time it for the calmest, clearest light. A mask and snorkel are all you need; the blue glow is strongest mid-day.

Can we dive on the day?

Yes, with notice. The Los Haitises mangroves and the deeper leeward sites are among the island's signature dives — coral heads, walls, and clear water. We arrange it in advance with a local dive operator; it is quoted separately from the charter rate.

What if it rains or the weather changes?

We rebook to the next available day at no charge. Samaná is arid and sunny with steady December through May trades in our winter sailing season; the leeward coast is sheltered and charters here rarely cancel for weather.

Can we extend into a sunset?

Yes. Sunset extensions are billed at $250 per additional hour. The light on the leeward coast in the late afternoon is the best of the day, and the sail back into Marina Puerto Bahía at dusk is unforgettable.
