The question we get asked most about the Arctic expedition is always the same: when is the best time to see the northern lights in Norway? Short answer: September to March, whenever the sky is dark and clear. The useful answer is that every month offers a different trip.
What really matters: darkness and clear skies
- Stay several days. With 5–7 nights around Tromsø, your odds of seeing at least one aurora are very high; a two-night trip is a lottery.
- Keep moving. Coastal Norwegian weather is local — one fjord overcast, the next one clear. That's the sailboat's edge over any hotel: we sail to open sky.
Month by month
September
Season opens. Dark nights, mild temperatures (5–10 °C), snow-free mountains and auroras reflected in calm water. Daylight sailing too — ideal if you want active sailing plus auroras.
October
Growing darkness, first snow on the peaks. Statistically the equinoxes (September–October and February–March) bring the highest geomagnetic activity.
November & December
Polar night: the sun no longer rises and the sky can ignite at any hour. The purest Arctic experience — perpetual blue light at noon and auroras over snowy decks. For travellers who want the extreme.
January
Deep winter, maximum darkness, an all-white landscape. Lofoten in January is another planet: black peaks, steel sea, green sky.
February & March
Light returns day by day, the landscape stays snowy, and the March equinox fires activity up again. Many photographers call February–March the best balance: daylight sailing hours, still-long nights, rising temperatures.
2026–2027: an excellent window
The solar cycle remains near its maximum, multiplying the strong geomagnetic storms that fill the whole sky. The 2026–2027 seasons are among the decade's best windows for this trip.
